Annie Sloan Chalk Paint - upcycling with ease
Heralded as the best paint for upcyclers because of its remarkable versatility and impressive colour range, the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint range has revolutionised decorative painting over the past 25 years. Its appeal lies in fact that it is so user friendly and requires very little preparation such as priming or sanding and you can use it indoors or outside. It goes on any surface from wood to metal and matt plastic to terracotta. It can revitalise tired old furniture, walls, ceilings and floors with ease.
Having recently been on an Annie Sloan Chalk Paint workshop held at Portobello Interiors in Cuffley, Hertfordshire, I got to learn some of the techniques and paint effects achievable with this wonder paint. The proprietor had to undertake full training by Annie Sloan herself before being able to stock this illusive selection of paints. The reason for this became apparent during the workshop, for although it is easy to use, you need to know how to use it correctly. She advised on first decanting the paint, on diluting it correctly and using the right brush strokes. The morning was spent gaining some fun ideas for paint effects and I came away armed and ready to tackle my first project.
What sets this paint apart is that it allows you to really enjoy painting by removing the need to fully prep the piece beforehand. It is also about decorating with more freedom of expression, independence and intuition.
