Making an entrance - hallway chic

Those first impressions really do count when you are inviting guests into your home.  A bright, clean and fresh hallway will certainly make visitors welcome and relaxed.

A beautiful console table can be a statement piece within the hallway.  Symmetrically placed table lamps will showcase your design skills. They are useful for placing those little everyday essentials like keys and bags too.

There are many different designs of hallway bench seating. It is a practical solution for changing and storing shoes, as well as somewhere to hang coats.

Often hallways are narrow and long.  Choose bright and light wall colours and wallpaper that will reflect the light and make the space appear wider.  Lighting is key to making a space appear larger.  Position ample low level lights around the area and use down lighters on the ceiling to maximise illumination.

Mirrors are essential for checking your appearance before you dash outside, but also reflect light and space back into the hallway and so create the illusion of space.

There is no reason why a practical family hallway cannot have strong design edge. Create a feature wall for a stand out statement.  A bright patterned print or bold design on one wall will show confidence and style.

The hallway is a high traffic area subject to dirty shoes and the elements,so it is important that the flooring is hard wearing and durable.  Wood flooring is easy to clean and can be used throughout to bring the different areas of the house together creating a sense of continuity.  Cover a wooden floor with a colourful runner and use a door mat for getting rid of the worst dirt and grime.

For period properties, geometric tiles are perfect as they reflect the age of the house and are hard wearing, they also come in a wide range of geometric patterns.  Highly patterned decorative tiles work well in any home however, and create a traditional style.

A picture wall displaying pictures and family portraits is a fabulous design feature. And finally use finishing touches like a fresh vase of flowers or a scented candle for ambience and freshness.
